Collision car insurance and your deductible

Collision car insurance generally helps with covered damage to your vehicle after a collision. The deductible and settlement terms are as important to compare as the premium.

Questions to ask a provider

Compare deductibles, the value of your vehicle, and any requirements in your financing or lease agreement.

What a collision deductible changes

If a covered repair costs $3,000 and the applicable deductible is $500, the simplified result is a $500 share for you and $2,500 for the insurer. This hypothetical assumes the full repair is covered; valuation, exclusions, and other policy terms can change the settlement.

Collision versus comprehensive coverage

Collision concerns covered collision damage to your vehicle. Comprehensive concerns covered events other than a collision. Ask the provider which coverage would apply to the specific situations you want addressed, rather than assuming the labels explain every exception.

Choose a deductible you understand

Compare the premium at different deductible levels and consider what you could pay toward a covered repair. Record the deductible with each quote; a lower premium paired with a larger deductible changes the tradeoff.

If your car is financed or leased

Review your agreement and ask the lender or leasing company what protection it requires. Confirm the permitted deductible and how the lender should be identified on the policy. Coverage for damage to a vehicle is separate from any gap agreement.

Repair and settlement questions

  • How is the vehicle’s value determined for a covered total loss?
  • Which deductible applies?
  • How are repair estimates and parts handled under this policy?
  • Is a rental vehicle benefit included, optional, or absent?

Collision coverage FAQs

Does collision pay every repair bill?+

No. The loss must be covered, and deductibles, valuation terms, exclusions, and limits may apply. Routine maintenance is a separate issue.

Can I remove collision from an older vehicle?+

Ask about your obligations, vehicle value, and ability to pay for repairs or replacement. A lower vehicle value alone does not answer the entire decision.
